Welcome to the Johns Hopkins Center for Human Nutrition. Founded in 1990, our Center is based at the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Our location at the largest school of public health in the world and our close ties to a premier school of medicine confer us great advantage. There are many opportunities for collaboration and for moving scientific findings into the real world of disease prevention and health promotion. Our research agenda encompasses many topics, but public health relevance and applications is a common thread. So is the global reach of the majority of our research.ᅠ

Center for Human Nutrition, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas
There is compelling evidence that the science of nutrition offers humanity a way to achieve a better quality of life. Nutrition provides ways not only of treating but preventing illness, whether derived from genetic or environmental sources. In view of this, a Center for Human Nutrition was established at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center through the creation of an endowment fund for UT Southwestern to use in developing a program to "place the entire field of nutrition on a firm scientific foundation."

Columbia University: College of Physicians and Surgeons, Nutrition Curriculum
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University was one of eight medical schools nationally to receive funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Program "Preparing physicians for the future. A Program in Medical Education." Our new curriculum, completed in 1997, has been created around longitudinally integrated four-year long tracks in basic sciences, population sciences, social and behavioral sciences and clinical sciences. In addition to a tradition of strength in basic science there is emphasis on health promotion, disease prevention and behavioral medicine. Nutrition is recognized as one of these four year themes. To help identify areas relevant to nutrition, one of the goals of the Nutrition web page is to highlight the specific nutrition content throughout the curriculum....

Institute of Human Nutrition, Columbia University
As we leave the twentieth century, nutrition is increasingly being recognized as a major modulator of human development and function and disease prevention. Major gaps exist in our understanding of the mechanisms whereby nutritional regulatory processes occur. The program outlined herein describes plans to help fill these gaps through research in molecular nutrition, biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, and nutritional epidemiology and public health.

Northwestern Nutrition Academic Award Program
This site is the Northwestern University Medical School's Nutrition Academic Award Program. The program is supported by grants from the NHLBI and its goals are: 'to encourage development or enhancement of medical school curricula to increase opportunities for students, house staff, faculty, and practicing physicians to learn nutrition principles and clinical practice skills with an emphasis on preventing cardiovascular diseases, obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. Stanford University School of Medicine Nutrition Academic Award
The overall goal of the nutrition curriculum is for learners to develop a basic understanding of the scientific principles of nutrition, the role of nutrition intervention in patient care, and the role of nutrition in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and other chronic diseases in the general population and in populations with special risk factors. The web-based medical student course will provide the foundation on which to build training experiences for residents in the Stanford residency programs in Medicine and Pediatrics, for physician assistants and family nurse practitioners in the Primary Care Associate Program, and for practicing physicians through the SHINE program (Stanford Health Information Network for Education) and a CME course.

Tufts University Nutrition Academic Award
In Year One, Tufts University School of Medicine has a 27-hour required course, Nutrition and Medicine, which has been given since 1991. In Year Two, Principles of Clinical Medicine gives students an opportunity to conduct nutrition evaluations of nursing home patients. In addition, nutrition assessment is integrated into the Interviewing (Year One) and Physical Diagnosis (Year Two) courses. The Nutrition Academic Award (1998-2003; NIH HL-97-011) from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), has given Tufts the opportunity to expand nutrition education to students in their clinical years (Year Three), as well as to Residents practicing at Tufts University School of Medicine teaching hospitals....

University of Alabama at Birmingham Nutrition Academic Award
Modifying a patients nutrition is cost effective for the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) but underutilized by physicians due to their lack of skills in counseling patients to change adverse lifestyles. For the Nutrition Academic Award (NAA) at UAB, our first aim is to develop, implement and evaluate a multidisciplinary curriculum in nutrition and prevention of CVD. This curriculum will focus on the training and application of skills for diet and activity counseling by a sequence of learning activities: 1) emphasis on the importance of nutrition for personal and patient health promotion and disease prevention, 2) demonstration of enjoyable, heart healthy meals prior to starting classes, 3) meaningful experience with practical recipe modification and addressing patient-derived, CVD nutrition questions in the freshman nutrition course, 4) skills training in diet and activity counseling in the sophomore year, 5) application of these counseling skills in family medicine (FM) offices in their junior year and 6) advanced skills training in applied CVD prevention in a senior elective.

The Department of Food Science and Nutrition (FScN) offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Nutrition and in Food Science that prepare students for careers related to food and health. The Nutrition Academic Award (NAA) is an award from the National Institutes of Health in response to national and public recommendations to enhance the nutrition education of health care providers.
