The WHEEL Council
The WHEEL Council, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization incorporated in Arizona in March of 1995 with the vision of creating programs that merge traditional cultural knowledge with scientific research to facilitate healthy life choices. Our mission is to prevent drug and alcohol use and other destructive behaviors in young people by combining storytelling, the arts, and cultural empowerment with scientific research. We have actualized this goal by creating substance abuse prevention (SAP) and HIV prevention (HIVP) lunch and after school clubs for middle school students. And, we have created parent classes designed to help parents talk about these difficult subjects with their children. We use the innovative, culture-based Storytelling Powerbook (including Spanish translation) and fotonovellas, bilingual comic books, as tools to communicate prevention values to youth. The Wheel Club health education programs serve the Murphy School District in the southwest area of Phoenix, Arizona, five miles from the urban center of Phoenix. This section of Phoenix is federally designated as an Enterprise Zone. The school district has four schools, Hamilton, Sullivan, Kuban and Garcia, serving 2,600 total students head start through eighth grade. Nearly all the district’s children are at-risk as defined by the State of Arizona. |
